We often think of joy as a singular, explosive emotion—a fireworks display of happiness. But in my work as a Personal Development, Mindfulness, Wellness, and Somatic Coach, I’ve found that joy is more like a radio frequency. It ranges from the faint, static-like hum of a glimmer to the steady, powerful transmission of deep good fortune.
When we only look for the “big” moments of happiness, we miss the vast majority of our lives. By learning to label and acknowledge the different intensities of joy, we train our nervous systems to recognize that goodness is always present, even if it’s currently on a low frequency.
Here is a guide to the spectrum of joy, from the micro-moment to the steady state, along with ways to reflect on each.
1. The Glimmer (The Spark)
Glimmers are those tiny, fleeting moments of safety, ease, or connection that shift our nervous system. They are the “micro-moments” that prove the world has gentle edges.
Example: Noticing the way the afternoon sun hits your favorite plant, or the sudden coolness of a breeze on a warm day.
Reflection Question: What is one tiny, sensory detail that made me pause and breathe easier today?
2. The Soft Contentment (The Hum)
This is a low-level, steady state of “okay-ness.” It is the absence of urgent stress. It’s the feeling of grounding yourself in the present moment without needing anything to change.
Example: Sitting in your favorite chair with a cup of tea, feeling the weight of your body supported by the cushion, knowing there is nothing urgent you need to do for the next ten minutes.
Reflection Question: Where in my body do I feel the most neutral, quiet comfort right now?
3. The Warm Glow (The Appreciation)
This occurs when you take a moment to intentionally acknowledge something good. It is the conscious shift from passive contentment to active gratitude. It’s the feeling of choosing to see the light.
Example: Taking a moment to appreciate the sound of a loved one’s laugh or feeling proud of a small task you successfully completed.
Reflection Question: What is one “small” thing I did or experienced today that I want to honor and truly appreciate?
4. The Ripple of Delight (The Peak)
This is an active, positive emotion. It is more than just feeling “good”—it is a moment of genuine pleasure, laughter, or excitement. It has a kinetic energy that makes you want to move or share that feeling with others.
Example: Hearing a song you love and feeling an immediate urge to dance, or experiencing a moment of pure, unadulterated laughter during a conversation.
Reflection Question: When was the last time I felt a surge of energy or excitement in my body, and what triggered it?
5. The Reservoir of Good Fortune (The Sustained State)
This is the deepest level. It is the recognition of the long-term, structural goodness in your life. It is the awareness of your safety, your relationships, your health, or your personal agency. This is not a fleeting feeling; it is an anchored mindset.
Example: Pausing to realize that you have a community that supports you, or recognizing that you have the tools and resilience to navigate whatever comes your way.
Reflection Question: What foundational elements of my life—my people, my skills, or my home—provide me with the deepest sense of abundance?
As you move through your week, I invite you to act as a “Joy Detective.” Don’t wait for the big fireworks. Instead, start tuning your internal radio to these different frequencies. When you acknowledge the hum of contentment or the spark of a glimmer, you aren’t just labeling an emotion—you are actively participating in the transformation of your own life.
